Lotus Pods
In the Terrarium
Suitable for a variety of reptiles, these pods add an aesthetic touch to any enclosure. They are an excellent hiding spot for small animals and provide a natural environment for them to live in. These lotus seed pods are a great addition to your pet's home and will make it feel more like their natural habitat. Simply place the Pods on top of the leaf litter.
In the Aquarium
Lotus pods are just like like Alder cones and Catappa leaves in the sense that they will give the aquarium a natural look and are rich in tannins. They can lead to a slight decrease in the pH value and a red/brown discolouration of the water. Like other natural products containing tannins, the pods also have an antibacterial and antifungal effect, reduce stress, and prevent diseases in the aquarium.
The lotus pods colour the water brown and are therefore very suitable for black water biotope aquariums.
To use these in the Aquarium, simply drop them in, and they will eventually sink to the bottom of the water, although this may take quite a while. To speed up the process you can boil the pods for around 30 minutes. Try to make sure the pods are totally submerged using something to weigh them down. Once boiled, they should sink in the Aquarium. It is also possible to add the tannin stained water to the aquarium, giving the aquarium water a natural brown colour or simply pour away the water if you would prefer clear water in the Aquarium.
